On 9 November , the Prince of Wales' birthday holiday, a new Tasmanian flag with Union Jack, white cross and stars was hoisted. News came within weeks that this design did not comply with British Admiralty rules.

A proclamation which appeared in the Hobart Town Gazette on 25 September , and accompanied by illustrations, officially proclaimed three flags for the colony of Tasmania. However, the flag for Government vessels, the Blue Ensign with lion passant on a white shield or badge in the fly of the flag, was subsequently adopted for general State Government use, but was not officially gazetted until 3 December There is no official record of the reason for using the lion.
It was given the name 'devil' by early European settlers who were frightened by its unfamiliar night-time calls. Crocoite is an unusual orange-red lead mineral which can be beautiful and colourful. The main source of quality specimens is the Dundas district on the west coast of Tasmania. The crystals there are usually long thin prisms, however large crystals from this locality have been scarce in the past thirty years.
