The film eventually started a franchise : a direct-to-video sequel, Stitch! The Movie was released on August 26 , A second television series, an anime titled Stitch! It was dubbed to English with an entirely different voice cast from the rest of the franchise, with said dub first airing in The thirteen episodes of the Mandarin dub aired in March The original English version of the Chinese series aired in February , again with none of the original voice actors from the films or first TV series returning.
Both of the latter two shows shift the tone of the franchise from "soft" science fiction to science fantasy and controversially remove franchise title character Lilo Pelekai as a main character; she is replaced by Yuna Kamihara in the anime and Wang Ai Ling in the Chinese series. Jumba Jookiba is arrested and put on trial by the Galactic Federation for "illegal genetic experimentation", evidenced by his creation Experiment , a small sentient creature with unparalleled intelligence and strength, but also a propensity to cause chaos.
Jumba is imprisoned while Experiment is sentenced to exile on a desert asteroid. The Grand Councilwoman dispatches Jumba and Agent Pleakley , the Council's expert on Earth, to the planet to have captured discreetly.
On Kauai, a young woman named Nani has been struggling with caring for her rambunctious and friendless younger sister, Lilo , who's been ridiculed by her hula classmates and peers following incident that Mertle instigated, following the death of their parents in a car accident.
A social worker named Cobra Bubbles expresses increasing concern that Nani is unable to take adequate care of Lilo. To reduce Lilo's grief after a brief argument, Nani decides to let Lilo adopt a dog. At the shelter, Lilo immediately takes a keen interest in Experiment , who is impersonating a dog, in order to escape captivity.
In spite of Nani's doubts, Lilo names " Stitch " and shows him around the island. That evening, as Lilo and Stitch eat dinner at the restaurant where Nani works, Jumba and Pleakley try but fail to capture Stitch.
The resulting chaos is blamed on Stitch, causing Nani to be fired. The next day, Cobra warns Nani that if she doesn't get another job, Cobra will have to place Lilo with a foster family. As Nani attempts to find another job, Lilo tries educating Stitch about Elvis Presley , whom she calls a "model citizen". However, Stitch's antics, including evading Jumba and Pleakley, ruin Nani's chances of finding work.
Nani's friend, David , invites Nani and Lilo to take a break and enjoy a day of surfing. While Nani, Lilo and Stitch ride on a huge wave, Jumba makes one final effort to capture Stitch from underwater, causing Nani to wipe out, and Stitch unintentionally pulls Lilo down with him.
Although everyone gets safely to shore, Cobra witnesses this unfortunate event, telling Nani that although she means well, Lilo will have to be taken away. After seeing how much trouble he has caused, Stitch runs off. The next morning, the Councilwoman, frustrated with their lackluster progress, relieves Jumba and Pleakley of their assignment, giving it to the militant Captain Gantu instead.
This gave Jumba to pursue Stitch by using less covert methods. Meanwhile, David informs Nani of a job opportunity, which Nani rushes to pursue. Stitch, hiding in the nearby woods, encounters Jumba, who chases Stitch back to Lilo's house. A fight ensues, which ends in Lilo and Nani's house being blown up. Cobra arrives to collect Lilo and take her away.
As Nani and Cobra argue, Lilo runs away and encounters Stitch, who reveals his alien identity just moments before Captain Gantu captures both of them. Stitch manages to escape before Gantu's ship takes off and is confronted by Nani. Before he can explain, Jumba and Pleakley capture Stitch themselves. Nani demands that they help her rescue Lilo, but Jumba insists they only came for Stitch. It feels like ages since Disney gifted us with numerous gems like 'Bambi', 'The Little Mermaid', 'The Lion King' etc to name only a few but things haven't been going too well for them in the last 20ish years.
The other day I saw 'Tarzan and Jane' and I was mortified at how awful it was. Not just in term of its content, but even the animation looked very amateur. Sadly, Disney has gone back to churning the usual crap and the success of trash like 'High School Musical' can assure us that we cannot expect anything great from Disney for a while longer.
The characters, setting and music are all very refreshing. It's quite a nice touch of Disney to reintroduce Elvis to the younger generation. I loved most of the songs including Wynonna's version of 'Burning Love'. Those bitches totally ruin that song. I didn't listen to the rest of the songs during the end credits but i hear that those too have been ruined by non-talents of the current-day. The setting in Hawaii is beautiful. I know it's only animation but it makes one want to go live there.
The Hawaiian culture is very nicely portrayed. The characters are very unique, real and lovable. We can recognize the little brat we once were in Lilo.
She's a brat and gives her sister one hell of a time but also has a soft spot. She clearly loves her sister and is pretty much a lonely child.
The sisters relationship was very real. Nani is pretty much the sole guardian struggling to make a living and raise her sister. This was also another point that 'Lilo and Stitch' lightly tackle, real life situations where an elder sister is trying to be a good parent to her little sis while she is also threatened by a social worker and tries to balance her worklife and life at home which is clearly dysfunctional.
At the same time we also see that she hardly has time for any romantic relationships. Stitch is one of the most unique characters of a Disney film. He is pretty much like an outsider who doesn't get along with anyone in the beginning, mostly through faults of his own but gradually forms a close bond with Lilo and Nani kind of like me when I was a teen except that instead of Lilo and Nani I had a few good friends.
The voice cast that includes names like Tia Carrere, David Ogden Stiers Ving Rhames and even Chris Sanders who created the film do a fine job giving life to their characters. It tackles some relevant themes such as family value, the need to belong and unconditional love but it is well handled and doesn't do it in a way that will bore the kids. It's as much a movie for kids as it is for adults. It all started with Chris Sanders's who also dubbed for Stitch idea and he deserves full credit for it.
Just think of the beautiful line often repeated in the film. Simple words yet such a powerful line. And it's coming from a Disney film. A real gem indeed. Chrysanthepop Mar 28, FAQ 2.
