Why is earthbound so rare

Why would it be marketed with headlines like "because this game stinks"? Included with the game were scratch and sniff cards instructing you to "Dig this buck-toothed funky smellin' varmint" and another card with a mystery smell that you could answer for a prize from Nintendo. It's a role playing game, it's an adventure game, it's an action game, and it has a cleverly American themed hilarious story that was never seen before. Instead of the typical swords and magic Japanese RPG, Earthbound was Modern times in an "almost-America" setting with recognizable kids and settings.
